Oakland Tech DT has his eyes on Washington

A defensive tackle prospect who is just now starting to pop up on recruiting radars is Oakland (Ca.) Tech DT Fred Thompson. He recently took a visit to Arizona and is getting ready to schedule a visit with Washington as well. Dawgman.com caught up with the talented defender and he updated us on things...

Washington already has one commitment from Oakland Tech, WR DiAndre Campbell, and after viewing game film, it appears they like what Thompson has to offer as well.

"Coach (Nick) Holt is the one recruiting me," Thompson told Dawgman.com. "He came in the spring and got our tape and I guess they really liked what I could do and what I have to offer so they offered me right after the start of the season."

Thompson plays along the offensive line, holding down the right tackle position, but he said the three schools that have offered him - Washington, Arizona and Oregon State - all like him on the defensive side of the ball.

"I'm 6-4, 294-pounds so teams like me inside, but I can play defensive end or defensive tackle," Thompson said. "They all like my explosiveness and my size and what I can do on the field."

Besides his three offers, Washington State, UNLV, UCLA, California, Arizona State and Oregon have all made contact as well.

"Of those schools, Oregon and UCLA have really been on me a lot," Thompson said. "I like all of those schools, so I'm still open to everyone."

Last weekend, Thompson took his first visit, taking in Arizona's game against UCLA.

"It was a really good visit," Thompson said. "I got to meet with the coaches, I saw a great game and I really enjoyed just seeing the campus and the program up close.

"The coaches there told me they love my size and what that would mean to their defense, but they didn't put a lot of pressure on me to commit. They just said they want me to play for them and that when I'm ready, they would love to have me."

Thompson also mentioned he and Campbell are looking to visit Seattle before the season ends.

"We're looking at Washington's last two games as weeks when we could go up there and take our official visits," Thompson said. "I know they play Washington State the last weekend of November and they play Cal the first week of December so both of those are ones we want to make."

Does the fact that Campbell has already committed to Washington help the Husky cause?

"I'm not saying it will be the deciding factor, but it's definitely a factor for me," Thompson said. "DiAndre and I grew up playing ball together and it would be cool to play college ball with him, but we both know we have to go to a school that fits us best as individuals. If that's the same school, that would be great, but it isn't necessarily what we are looking to do."

Tomorrow night, Oakland Tech takes on Skyline at home.

We'll continue to keep track of Thompson as he continues on the recruiting process and update things as they happen.
