Simmons excited about early signing day

Wednesday is the beginning of the early signing period for basketball recruits and Salesian (Richmond, Ca.) F Desmond Simmons plans to sign his letter-of-intent to play for Washington in a small ceremony at his school. Dawgman.com caught up with the talented wing and he updated us on how his offseason has gone and his preparations for the big cut that's coming...

What big cut you ask?

"I had heard that coach (Lorenzo) Romar didn't allow braids and then on my visit up there he and I were talking and he told me I needed to cut them and I was like 'that's cool, I can handle that'," Simmons admitted with a chuckle. "Honestly, cutting my hair was the least of my worries. I was more worried about learning my new spot and working on things and that's what was most important to me."

This season Simmons will be playing more on the wing so one thing he worked on more was his perimiter game which is strange considering as a true front-court player last year he averaged 22.5 points per game.

"I'm playing a lot more on the wing this year so I've been working on my shooting and my ball handling," Simmons said. "I was up at Washington's camp in the summer and I got a chance to work one-on-one with coach Romar on my shooting and what he expects out of his guys. It helped me get a feel for how they practice and what the coaches are like in that situation.

"(Playing on the perimeter) is something that has taken me a little while to get comfortable with, but now I'm used to it and it feels good. I still have a lot of work I need to put in, but I feel a lot more comfortable out there now."

Simmons is the only commitment currently on the board for Washington at this point, turning down offers from Oregon State and St. Marys to become a Husky and he said he plans to sign on Wednesday after a little ceremony at his school.

"I'm real excited to get it in and be done," Simmons said. "We'll have a 20-minute ceremony and then I will fax it in from school.

"When I was up at camp, I got to spend time with Abdul Gaddy and Venoy Overton and all of those guys. On my unofficial visit I got to go to a light workout and we just got up and down and it felt really comfortable up there.

"I'm real excited about it and can't wait to get there."
