Huskies Lose Heartbreaker On Road

A deep two by Mustafa Abdul-Hamid as time expired put a dagger in the heart of Washington and their efforts to get their first road win of the season, as UCLA defeated the Huskies 62-61 at Pauley Pavilion Thursday night. The Huskies are now 0-3 on the road in Pac-10 play and are struggling to find some confidence away from the friendly confines of Bank of America Arena.

Washington's Isaiah Thomas had a chance to put the Huskies up three with less than 20 seconds to go, but couldn't put down the front end of a 1-1. Michael Roll was fouled by UW's Darnell Gant with 7.6 seconds left and cooly put both free throws in to give UCLA a 60-59 lead.

The Huskies' Venoy Overton then went coast-to-coast, scoring a contested layup with 3.2 seconds left. The Bruins moved the ball to the top of the key, where Abdul-Hamid's shot swished in as time expired. It was the second game he's won at the death, as he also beat Concordia with a buzzer-beater.

The frenetic finish capped off a very poor second half for both teams, as UW scored only 20 points the last 20 minutes. Quincy Pondexter led the Huskies (12-6, 3-4) with 23 points, including a 3-three point basket with 1:18 left that gave UW a 59-56 lead. Thomas finished with 11 points, the only other Husky to finish in double-figures.

UCLA (8-10, 3-3) had four players in double-digits, led by the 16 points of freshman forward Reeves Nelson. Malcolm Lee added 13, Nikola Dragovic 11 and Tyler Honeycutt 10 points for the Bruins. Honeycutt, also a freshman, brought down nine rebounds.

The Bruins played nearly the whole game in a 2-3 zone, the first time a Ben Howland-coached UCLA team has ever done that against Washington. The Huskies responded by shooting 58 percent in the first half, including six 3-pointers. But their stroke eluded them when they needed it most, shooting only 8-28 from the field and 1-7 from deep.
