2011 Spotlight: Jason Gibson

One of the top linebackers on the west coast this year is Junipero Serra (Gardena, Ca.) LB Jason Gibson. Washington got in the mix early on by offering the talented defender and more schools have followed suit. Dawgman.com caught up with him recently and he updated us on where the Dawgs stand in the recruiting pecking order and his plans to visit campus this spring...

Gibson, rated early on as the sixth-best outside linebacker in the country by Scout.com, is a player who could play any of the linebacker positions, but he said schools like him outside due to his speed, quickness and relentless pursuit of the football.

"I play on the weakside for us and that's where a lot of schools like me," Gibson told Dawgman.com recently. "I'm probably best at rushing the quarterback, but I'm a sure-tackler and I feel like I can drop into coverage and play well in that aspect too."

Last season, on a Serra team that went 15-0 and won the CIF State Championship for their section, Gibson was a heavy contributor, posting 94 tackles, 15.5 sacks and one forced fumble.

"I have good instincts," Gibson said. "It helps me to read the play and then get where I need to go and it allows me to play fast without thinking too much."

Recruiting has really been picking up for Gibson with nine early offers and more could be on the way.

"Washington, Washington State, Tennessee, Arizona, Arizona State, Stanford, California, UCLA and Florida have all offered me," Gibson said. "Oregon, Oregon State and USC are all close and USC told me they like me a lot, but since the staff is new, they want to evaluate things and then they will get back to me.

"I like all of the schools that have offered me right now and I'm not close to making a decision. I want to visit a bunch of schools in the spring so I can watch their workouts and see the coaches coaching up the players and I want to get out to camps and be coached by them."

One school Gibson said he's planning to see is Washington, one of the first schools to extend him an offer.

"I have a really good relationship with the coaches at Washington already," Gibson said. "I've been talking to them for a little while now and they said they'd love for me to come up and check them out.

"I want to get up there for spring ball at some point and to sit down and meet with the coaches. I also am thinking about attending their 'Rising Stars' camp, but I need to make sure I have enough time to do that."

We'll have more on Gibson in the coming weeks and months as he gets closer to taking some unofficial visits.
