Hoops Preview - USC

Now with their first road win under their belt, the (17-8,7-6) Washington Huskies will return home tonight to face off against the (15-9,7-5) USC Trojans. The game is at the Bank of America Arena at 7:30 p.m. PST. In the all-time series between the teams, USC is edging the Huskies by a record of 66-65. The Trojans are 37-28 while playing in Seattle.

In the last game between the two teams on Jan. 23, USC showed the Huskies the door in Los Angeles with a decisive 87-61 victory.

The Trojans had five players in double digits and were led by senior forward Marcus Johnson, who finished with 22 points on 9 of 11 shooting from the field.

Also having a good game was Nikola Vucevic, a 6'10'' sophomore forward, who finished with 11 points on 5 of 9 shooting and 13 boards.

Staring at the point guard position was senior Mike Gerrity. He finished with 15 points on 4 of 6 shooting from the field and 7 assists.

As a team, the Trojans shot 58 percent from the floor and 60 percent from beyond the arc.

They also had 32 rebounds and had just 9 turnovers.

On the other end of the court, the Huskies were led by junior guard Venoy Overton, who had 18 points on 7 of 13 shooting off of the bench and Isaiah Thomas finished with 14 points, but was only 3 of 10 from the field. He also had 3 turnovers.

Also having an unproductive game was senior forward Quincy Pondexter. He finished with just 2 points on 1 of 10 shooting from the floor, but he had 8 rebounds and 2 steals.

Washington finished with just 37 percent shooting from the floor and 23 percent from deep. They finished with 32 boards and also had 13 turnovers.

On the season, the Trojans got off to a rough start losing to Loyola Marymount, Nebraska, Texas and Georgia Tech in non-league play. They lost to Stanford, California, Washington State, Oregon State and Oregon in league play.

Their wins this season have come against UC Riverside, Coppin State, Sacramento State, Idaho State, Tennessee, Western Michigan, Saint Mary's, UNLV, Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA, Washington, California, Stanford and UCLA. They are currently riding a three-game winning streak.

Leading their team in scoring this season has been senior Dwight Lewis, who despite shooting just 40 percent from the field, is averaging 13.7 points a game. In the last 10 games he is averaging 15.9 points.

Vucevic is also making a solid contribution this season with 11.6 points per game on 52 percent shooting. He is also pulling in 9.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks a game.

So far this season as a team they are averaging just 60.4 points a game on 44 percent shooting, but have held their opponents to a Pac-10 low of 56.3 points per game. They also average 14.5 turnovers a game and pull in 34.7 rebounds.
