Huskies are first to offer Poly's Waller

One of the most physically gifted linebackers on the west coast this year promises to be Long Beach (Ca.) Poly's Corey Waller and Washington wasted no time in getting him an early offer. spoke with the talented defender recently and he updated us on things including his reaction when the Dawgs finally made him an offer…

"I was excited, real excited," Waller told "I mean, it was just a relief to get an offer really. They are building a good program up there, but mostly it was just a relief that I got an offer."

There were some rumors floating around that Waller had actually committed to the Huskies, but he said he was unaware of where those came from.

"No, I didn't commit," Waller said. "I mean, like I said, I was excited, but I want to be patient and wait to see what other schools are going to offer. Then I'll do research on them and make sure I find out what they are about. Then I'll take my time, take my visits and then I'll make my decision, but it won't be for a while."

Waller's only offer at this point is from Washington, but he said Vanderbilt, USC and UCLA have also been recruiting him pretty heavily.

As a junior in 2009, Waller was huge for the Jackrabbits, posting 70 tackles, 9.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, a blocked punt and even an interception.

"I played some with my hand down, I dropped into coverage, basically I did whatever they needed me to do," Waller admitted. "Most schools are looking at me as a linebacker and that's what I love to play. I can blitz, rush the quarterback, drop into coverage, whatever. I feel like I am a complete linebacker."

In addition to his ideal linebacker size and instincts, Waller also possesses 4.6-speed and recently posted 20 reps of 185 pounds on the bench.

Waller has spoken to Husky defensive line coach Johnnie Nansen and said they've talked about a lot of different things.

"I already knew the coaches up there from when they were down at USC," Waller said. "Coach Nansen is fired up about anything and everything. He's a fiery guy. I liked that.

"We talked just the other day about me coming up there for spring ball or for their camp. I'll definitely go up there for an unofficial so I can see what they have to offer."

Waller also said he plans to take in the USC Nike Camp and could make some other unofficial visits to schools, but is unsure when or if that will happen.

Besides getting it done in the weight room and on the field, Waller is also a very good student and plans to take the SAT in May.

We'll have more in the very near future on Waller as he gets deeper into the recruiting process.
