Huskies continue to lead for Shelton

Washington has had a lot of success keeping the local kids in the fold and one that continues to think very highly of the Husky football program is Auburn (Wa.) DT Danny Shelton. That being said, the talented defensive tackle prospect is still open to other schools and was able to speak with him recently and he updated us on where things stand...

"I'm still high on them, very high," Shelton told recently. "I'm not ready to make a decision or anything like that, but they are the school at the top for me right now.

"I'm still open to schools and what they have to offer, but I like the Huskies and the coaches and how close it is. It's a great program and I think they are headed in the right direction and my mom would like me to stay close, so that's a plus for them."

In addition to his offer from Washington, Shelton also claims offers from Washington State, Idaho, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford and UCLA with heavy interest coming from USC, Miami and LSU among others.

Shelton played last season in the 320 to 330 pound range, but is currently a svelte 285 pounds due to wrestling and throwing the shot this spring.

"I got really serious about getting leaner and adding muscle," Shelton said. "I'll probably play around 300 this fall, but right now this weight feels really good and I'm moving really well.

"I threw 53 feet (in the shot) a couple of weeks ago, but I think I can throw farther. I've been working on my explosion and my technique and that's been helping me."

As far as his summer plans, Shelton said he'll talk things over with his family, but he isn't sure he'll take in any camps, although he's open to it.

"I'm going to go up to Washington to visit them this month with my mom and the rest of my family," Shelton said. "It'll be a good chance for them to meet up with the coaches and talk to them and for me to just get a good one-on-one time with them.

"Coach (Johnny) Nansen and I have a good relationship. We talk a lot and I just feel comfortable with him and coach (Joel) Thomas is good to talk to too."

Shelton maintains he wants to take his official visits in the fall before he decides and said he'll begin setting those up as he gets closer to the start of his senior season.
