Top Cali safety has a leader

He's one of the top safety prospects in the country and Sacramento (Ca.) Grant's James Sample told on Monday evening that he's got an early leader, although he's not close to making a decision…

"Washington is my number one school right now," Sample told "I call and talk to coach (Jeff) Mills, coach (Demetrice) Martin and coach (Steve) Sarkisian every week, so I've really gotten to know them well and feel real comfortable with them as people and as coaches."

Washington was one of the first schools to offer Sample and since then, he's also received written offers from Washington State, Arizona and Arizona State while Nevada and San Diego State have both extended verbal offers.

"My grandma and Jordan Wallace's grandma are really close friends and I've known him for a long time," Sample said. "I've talked to him a couple of times about Washington and the atmosphere up there. He keeps telling me how much fun he's having and how great it is up there, so they are a school I want to see for myself."

Sample noted that he is going to try and make Washington's Rising Stars camp in mid-June, but is unsure if it will happen.

"That's the only camp I'm planning on right now, but I'll probably go to a couple more, I'm not real sure though," Sample said.

As a free safety last fall on one of the top teams in California, Sample notched 111 tackles, one interception, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. While he sees himself as a safety who plays the run and pass with equal ability, he said there's one thing that sets him apart from other prep prospects.

"I like to smack people in the mouth," Sample said matter-of-factly. "I love hitting people and setting the tone for my teammates. I can make a play on the ball when it's in the air or hit you and knock the ball out."

Sample said while the Huskies lead at this point, he's looking to wait and take all of his visits before he makes a decision on where he wants to play his college football.
