Commitment Impact: Josh Perkins

Washington has taken some hits recently on the recruiting front, but on Thursday they bounced back nicely with the commitment of Gahr (Cerritos, Ca.) WR Josh Perkins, a big wideout with the potential to be a real steal once he gets on campus. Here's a look at how his commitment impacts the 2011 recruiting class as well as where he fits into the Husky receiver corps…

Perkins joins Jamaal Jones as the only other wide receiver commitment in this class so far, but Washington is still in the mix for several top wideouts including Skyline's Kasen Williams and Chaparral's Antoine Arnold.

What Perkins brings to the table are soft hands, the ability to run across the middle to snag passes and deceptive speed that allows him to get separation against defensive backs.

Perkins also shows the physicality the Husky coaching staff is looking for in their wideouts. In several highlights form his video, you can see him fighting for the ball and winning battles against good-sized corners. He also looks like a willing blocker down the field and could help open up big runs once he gets better with his technique.

He'll need to focus on his speed and quickness once he arrives at Washington since he isn't a blazer, but in the Husky offense, he doesn't need to be a world-class sprinter to find success.

Perkins and Jones are both likely to be redshirted in 2011, allowing them the chance to get used to the speed of the game, what it takes to be successful and adding strength.

Once he sees the field, Perkins could be a 6'3", 215-pounder to add to the mix of James Johnson, Kevin Smith, DiAndre Campbell and Jones and, many Husky fans pray, Williams as well.

"I've had a lot of great receivers here, one his enrolling at Utah State this summer and Josh is the best one we've ever had here," Gahr offensive coordinator Jon Nielsen told on Thurday. "He's a special kid, he's smart, he's a great athlete. I have him on my 4 x 100 squad, so he's plenty fast and he's got football speed which you're always looking for."

Nielsen said Perkins is well on his way to qualifying and will take the SAT this coming weekend.
