Versatile Cali athlete nabs Husky offer

Washington continues to look for athletes who have speed to burn and they seem to have found one in Pacifica (Garden Grove, Ca.) CB/RB Joel Willis. He spoke to recently and talked about getting his offer from the Dawgs and also told us he doesn't care which side of the ball he plays on in college...

Willis was a dual-threat player for the Mariners as a junior last fall, totaling nearly 900 yards and nine touchdowns as a runner, receiver and returner and over 30 tackles and two interceptions from his cornerback position.

"I just like playing ball, it doesn't really matter what position I play," Willis admitted to "I've always felt that 'you can score on defense too' and that's the mindset I play with every time I get the chance to make a play on the ball.

"The coaches recruiting me all say they like my versatility and how I can play multiple positions, but they also like my speed.

"My slowest 40 time is a 4.42 and my fastest is a 4.38, so I have good speed and quickness."

Washington corners coach Demetrice Martin is the man recruiting Willis for the Huskies and recently he gave the athlete some good news.

"We've talked a little bit and he said he likes what I can do on the field," Willis said. "But I also talked to coach (Steve) Sarkisian and he said they were offering me and that they liked my speed and they wanted to get me on the field any way they could, so I don't think I really have a set position with them."

In addition to his offer from Washington, Willis has also nabbed offers from Nebraska, Arizona, Utah, Utah State and San Diego State.

"I'm not close to making a decision right now," Willis said. "I want to take some visits and see the schools and meet with the coaches. After that, I'll be able to make my choice so it will probably be during the season or after it."

Willis noted he plans to take in a day of the USC camp and could head north to Seattle for their Rising Stars camp, but may have to wait and take the unofficial visit in July.

"I don't know with my schedule right now when I will be able to make it, but I'm going to get up there at some point," Willis said.

We'll continue to keep in touch with Willis over the next few weeks and we'll update news as it breaks regarding his recruitment.
