Smith talks about Husky camp, offers

West Salem (Or.) QB Brett Smith continues to show his poise and patience in recruiting. While in Seattle this weekend, the talented signal-caller took in Jason Gesser's Nike NW Elite Football Camp and won MVP honors and then headed to Montlake in order to perform in front of the Washington coaches at the Skills Camp.

"It was a good trip for me," Smith told Sunday evening. "I got MVP honors at Jason Gesser's camp and then I felt like I did well at Washington's camp."

Following his performance at the Husky Skills Camp, Smith got a chance to talk with Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier.

"They both said I did well and that I'm in the group of guys they are evaluating right now," Smith said. "They've been recruiting me for a while now and I've visited Washington before, back in January for one of their Junior Days, so I'm pretty familiar with them and the school and the program.

"In the seven-on-sevens, my goal was to make good decisions and get my team into the endzone and then just focus on my reads. I think I did that pretty well and coach Sark and coach Nussmeier said I did really well with that."

As a junior in 2009, Smith completed 91 of 146 pass attempts for 1,614 yards with 17 touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing for 817 yards and 12 touchdowns and led his team to the 6A OSAA State Semifinals.

In addition to his interest from both Washington and Washington State, Smith already has offers from Eastern Washington, New Mexico State, San Jose State and Wyoming and will visit two of those schools in the near future.

"I'm going to head down to San Jose State in the next couple of weeks," Smith said. "I'm also planning to head out to Wyoming soon at some point as well. I'm not sure exactly what date or anything, but they are a school I'm definitely interested in."

Smith said he'll be patient and wait for the Husky coaches to make their evaluations and then see where things stand over the summer.
