Dawgs bounced in Pauley

Facing elimination from the race for the Pac-10 tournament the Huskies came out firing and jumped ahead of the UCLA Bruins 21-7. But in the end it was the Bruin seniors who closed the deal on senior night and grabbed the eighth and final spot in the Pac-10 tournament by defeating Washington 83-72 at Pauley Pavilion.

Dijon Thompson led the way for the Bruins, but it was seniors Jason Kapono and Ray Young who carried the team down the stretch. Both Kapono and Young finished with 20 points for the Bruins who struggled from the field in the first half.

The Huskies dominated the early portion of the game shooting 61 percent from the field in the first half and hitting four three pointers. A slew of turnovers allowed the Bruins to close the margin slightly but the Huskies went into halftime with a 36-26 lead. Nate Robinson paced the Huskies with ten first half points.

The Bruins would go on to score 57 points in the second half and at times looked unstoppable. Everything went down for the Bruins. The crowd became a factor and the Huskies were unable to produce solid offensive sets. The Bruins chipped away at the Husky lead and finally took it over at the 11:15 mark in the second half 50-49, prompting a Lorenzo Romar timeout.

The timeout proved to be ineffective. The Bruins scored seven straight points and forced another Washington timeout.

The Huskies were battling from behind without two of their regulars. Will Conroy picked up his fourth foul early in the second half and Brandon Roy was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain after being involved in a wrestling match for a loose ball. Bobby Jones was able to spark the Huskies with a three-point play at the eight-minute mark, but Jason Kapono took over with six straight points and pushed the UCLA lead to 13. Mike Jensen hit a pair of wing three pointers, but the Huskies couldn't make enough stops on the defensive end to mount a comeback.

The loss dropped the Huskies from a tie for 7th to 9th place in the Pac-10 and on the outside of the Pac-10 tournament picture. The Bruins will go on and face Arizona as the tournament's 8th seed. Washington concludes their season at 10-17, 5-13 in conference games.
