has an automatic bowl spot in 2014 with the 4-team playoff and 6 big bowls -- 3 "contract" & 3 "host."
East Carolina begged for years to get in, and I wanted them in over Memphis and Southern Miss when WVU was in the Big East.
Now that East Carolina gets in (because who else is there for the Big East to poach), and for football only, the automatic qualifier status vanishes in 2014.
East Carolina and the other Conference USA and Mountain West teams have exactly the same chance -- slim, without a top 12 ranking -- in C-USA and MWC as they have in the Big East.
Heck, Kent State in the Mid-American Conference has a great opportunity to take the Big East's usual place in the Orange Bowl this year since Louisville and Rutgers are NOT in the top 25, let alone the top 16.
Too little, too late for ECU. As I said, I like the Pirates.
