WVU Varsity Sports Update

West Virginia University men's soccer player Eric Schoenle has been named athlete of the week for his efforts this past weekend at the Stihl Soccer Classic hosted by Old Dominion.

A sophomore captain from Yardley, Pa., Schoenle score the game-winning goal in the 85th minute on Sunday's game against Old Dominion to secure a 2-1 victory. Schoenle headed in the goal off of Travis Pittman's corner kick, for his first-career goal. Schoenle was also named to the Stihl Soccer Classic all-tournament team. This was the second time Schoenle has been on an all-tournament team this season. Apart from his offensive contribution, Schoenle played a solid 90 minutes in both games against William & Mary and Old Dominion.

The WVU women's soccer team returns to action at home with its Big East opener on Thursday, Sept. 16, against Pitt at 7 p.m. WVU then welcomes ACC foe Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m.

  • Senior volleyball player and libero Bonnie West moved to No. 2 on WVU's all-time digs list with 32 digs last weekend at the Black and Gold Challenge hosted by Wake Forest. The Wildomar, Calif., native is only 42 digs away from the No. 1 spot.

    This Week in Cross Country

    The West Virginia University cross country team will have a few weeks to rest and practice in preparation for the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 1, in South Bend, Ind.

    The No. 15-ranked Mountaineers took third place at the Big East Preview race in Syracuse, N.Y., this past weekend ... the Mountaineers finished with 85 points, with No. 9 Syracuse landing in first place with 31 points and Connecticut in second with 47 points ... sophomore-transfer Kaitlyn Gillespie came in first place overall in the field of 76 runners to lead the team, beating Syracuse's Sarah Pagano by 20 seconds to the finish line.

    As WVU coach Sean Cleary is trying to solidify the roster, several Mountaineers made their first appearances of the 2010 season, including senior Maria Dalzot, and juniors Sarah-Anne Brault and Stephanie Caruso ... Dalzot came in 16th place overall at the Big East Preview, second best for the team, while sophomores Hallie Portner and Aubrey Moskal had solid finishes after performing well a week earlier at the WVU Invitational.

    A one-goal lead was not enough as the West Virginia women's soccer team allowed two goals in the final eight minutes, falling 2-1 at Miami, at the 2010 Hurricane Cup … UM forward Brittney Steinbruch netted the game-winner in the 88th minute, the second of two goals in a seven-minute span … the Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute on a bending shot from forward Blake Miller … WVU used a strong effort in the corner kick game to post a 4-0 victory over Florida Atlantic in game two of the Hurricane Cup … West Virginia netted three goals off corner kicks and were strong defensively to post their second shutout of the season … WVU's first goal came when defender Drea Barklage headed home the game's first score from six yards out off a corner … a persistent Mountaineer offense came out strong in the second half and doubled its score in the 51st minute off the foot of Miller … defenders Mallory Smith and Meghan Lewis added the final two goals off corners for WVU … 10 different Mountaineers took a shot, including a game-high five from Smith.
