First Round Takes Downturn; Jones Upset

West Virginia had tougher luck in the concluding weight classes of the first round of the NCAA Wrestling Tournament.

At 165 pounds, Tom McMath lost a close battle to Jason Erwinski of Northwestern, but it was the 174 pound bout that sent shockwaves through the tournament.

Undefeated number one seed Greg Jones lost a 3-2 tiebreaker decision to Ralph Everett of Hofstra, ending Jones' dream of back to back national titles.

The bad streak continued as Ryan Wilman suffered a 15-0 technical fall to Clint Wattenberg of Cornell in the 184 pound weight class.

At 285, Brent Miller received a bye and will face Boise State's Boe Rushton in the second round.

McMath, Jones and Wilman now move to the wrestleback brackets, where they can still earn All-America honors, but can finish no better than third overall.

Action will continue in the evening session, with six WVU wrestlers still alive in the Championship brackets.
