WVU Clings to Tenth; Four Wrestlers Remain

WVU is clinging to a tenth place tie following the afternoon sessions Day Two at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.

Shane Cunanan, Billy Smith, Brandon Lauer and Brent Miller will all compete in this evening's session as they try to help WVU stay in the top ten. Cunanan will be in the national semifinals, while Smith, Lauer and Miller hope to advance as far as third overall in the wrestlebacks.

WVU is tied for tenth with 29 points, but need their remaining wrestlers to advance to hang on to a top ten finish.

Seth Lisa became the third Mountaineer out of the tournament when he dropped a close 2-0 decision to Matt Valenti of Penn in the 125 pound weight class wrestlebacks.

Billy Smith, however, advanced in the wrestlebacks as he earned an 8-2 decision over Ryan Churella of Michigan. That win puts Smith into the 149 pound quarterfinals of the wrestlebacks.

Tom McMath followed Lebe to the sidelines as he suffered a narrow 8-7 loss to Doc Vecchio of Penn State, and Greg Jones surprisingly followed suit with a 3-2 loss to Rashad Evans of Michigan State after besting Eric Hauan of Northern Iowa in the previous match.

Brent Miller bested Joe Sahl of Lehigh by the count of 7-4, then defeated Israel Blevins of Purdue by the same count.
