Mountaineers 17th After Day Two Of NCAAs

A 1-4 evening dropped WVU to 17th place in the NCAA Wrestling National Championships.

West Virginia saw their hopes of a top ten finish go away in the evening session when they managed just one win in five matches at the NCAAs in Kansas City.

At 141, Shane Cunanan lost a closely contested 4-3 decision to Dylan Long of Northern Iowa. Cunanan will wrestle tomorrow, and could still finish as high as third.

Brandon Lauer recorded the only win of the evening with a 15-13 overtime victory over Tom Clum of Wisconsin, but Lauer sustained his second loss, this time to Zac Roberson of Iowa State by the score of 16-1. Lauer will wrestle for seventh place tomorrow.

Billy Smith fell out of the tournament with a 6-4 loss to Jake Percival of Ohio, and Brent Miller also was knocked out via a 7-3 loss to MAtt Feast of Penn.

WVU has 32.5 points and is in 17th position, but with only Cunanan and Lauer still in the tournament, have very few chances to score additional points to move up.
