Mountaineers Complete Sweep of Eagles

West Virginia completed a sweep of outmanned Coppin State with an 11-2 win in the second game of a doubleheader at Hawley Field on Tuesday.

WVU batted around in the second inning, scoring five runs to take an early 5-0 lead. Catcher J. C. Sousa had the big knock with a two run double, and Grant Psomas and Jake Serfass added RBI doubles of their own.

Coppin State scored a single run in the top of the third on a WVU throwing error, but West Virginia bounced right back with three more runs in the fourth to put the game away. Eric Grimm, Lee Fritz and Derek Cisar each had an RBI to send WVU on their way to the sweep.

The Mountaineers' bats weren't done yet, though, as they added three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Stan Posluszny and Derek Cisar drove in runs with yet another pair of RBI RBI doubles.

Pitcher Marty Fagler, who left the game after five innings, pitched very well. He gave up only one earned run on three hits, and struck out six batters while walking only one. Justin Asbury allowed one run in two innings of relief.

Lee Fritz led the Mountaineer attack with three hits, including a triple, and a stolen base. Curtis Klinton, Eric Grimm, Jarod Rine and J. C. Sousa each had two hits.

The Mountaineers and Eagles close out the series with a single game on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at Hawley Field.
