FASHION CHANGE

While uniform changes have been common over the last 10-15 years, this week's game will mark a definite departure in the headgear department. When was the last time WVU wore a helmet design other than the blue model with a gold flying WV? Answer at the end of this space.

SENIOR STREAK

For the second consecutive week, West Virginia will face an opponent playing its last home game of the season. That mean's senior day introductions, and hopefully Pitt's will be shorter than those at Louisville. The Cardinals not only introduced each player, but read a biography of each. Multiplied by 24 players, it took quite a while to get them all on the field. Fortunately, Pitt lists just 11 players to be recognized during their final game.

LET IT GO, LOUIE

In its official game notes, Pitt references its 2007 win no fewer than seven times.

FOUL FIELD

Yes, it's a story every other year. And yes, some media members from north of the border believes that makes it a non-story, as "both sides have to deal with it". Those excuses just don't hold water, though -- unlike the crappy playing surface at Heinz Field, which makes your local high school gridiron look like a fairway at Augusta National.

It's not that Heinz gets all that muddy, however. It's simply that the sandy base doesn't hold the turf down, and it gets torn up in big clods, revealing a slippery, uneven surface that does nothing to help the players keep their footing. Of course, such a field is tailor made for both the Panthers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, who rely on power football for wins. So long as that's the case, we'll continue to see a field more suited to camel racing than football on the banks of the Ohio.

FIELD GOAL FINALITY

It bears repeating, mostly because it's time for this streak to end. After missing their first three tries this year (Coastal Carolina 0-2, Marshall 0-1), WVU foes have connected on 15 consecutive field goal tries.

On the opposite side of the fence, Pitt opponents have made 13 of their 15 attempts this year, with one of those coming from 52 yards away.

A final note: WVU's Tyler Bitancurt has missed just one field goal "on his own" this year, as three of his attempts have been blocked.

Why all the field goal scrutiny? Would you bet against this game coming down to a last kick?

BREAKING THE TIE

West Virginia is a dead level 82-82-1 in nationally televised games. Friday's game on ABC will put WVU either one up or one down on the .500 mark.

TRIVIA ANSWER

In 1979, West Virginia wore a white helmet featuring a silhouette of the state and a football with "WVU" imprinted across it diagonally. The gold on blue helmets were introduced for the first game at New Mountaineer Field in 1980.
