Triple Threat

Following record-breaking performances over the weekend, swimmers Rachael Burnett and Mandie Nugent and sprinter Chelsea Carrier have been named WVU Student- Athletes of the Week.

Burnett, a native of Springfield, Va., started the meet individually with a win in the 500 free in a time of 4:43.04, her second-consecutive season title. She also took first in the 400 IM with a school record time of 4:14.41, almost two seconds in front of the second place competitor.

A Greater Manchester, England, native, Nugent won the 200 fly on the final day of competition with a time of 1:57.00 after setting a new Big East and school record time of 1:56.64 in the preliminary session. Nugent also finished second in the 100 fly with a time of 53.15. They were named co-Big East Women's Most Outstanding Swimmers.

Carrier's first-place performance in the pentathlon with 4,170 points broke her own school record of 4,136 points as she won two conference titles and was named the meet's Most Outstanding Field Athlete. The finish also marked the second -highest total ever at the Big East Championships and puts her third on the nation's top performance list.

She returned the next day to win the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.17, marking the first time someone has won back-to-back titles in the event since Villanova's Charmaine Walker in 2000-2001.

  • The No. 24 ranked WVU gymnastics team plays host to reigning East Atlantic Gymnastics League cham­pion North Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum. The meet is a Pink Meet – the Mountaineers will compete in pink uniforms, and fans are encouraged to also wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.

  • Pitcher Harrison Musgrave has been named to the 2011Big East/Big Ten Challenge All-Tournament Team presented by CollegeBaseball360 and earned a spot on the Big East Weekly Honor Roll for his pitching performance last weekend against Penn State. Shortstop Grant Buckner was on the honorable mention all-tournament team for his batting efforts in the tournament's three games.

  • Senior forward Madina Ali was named to this week's Big East Honor Roll after leading the West Virginia women's basketball team to a 90-79 victory over Pitt last week. Ali's double-double consisted of 21 points and matched a career-high 13 rebounds to pave the way to tie a season-high point total of 90 points for the Mountaineers. Ali shot 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the field and pulled down eight offensive boards. She also converted 3-of-4 attempts from the free throw line and dished out an assist.
