ESPN.com's Bruce Feldman reported Monday morning via Twitter that WVU has hired Detroit Lions assistant coach Daron Roberts as special teams coordinator and inside receivers coach -- a development that Mountaineer athletics officials would not immediately confirm.
"We have not hired anyone," said West Virginia
director of football communications Mike Montoro, shortly after Feldman tweeted his report just before 11:00 a.m. Monday.
Calls to the office of Mountaineer director of athletics Oliver Luck were not immediately returned.
Roberts has served as an assistant secondary coach with the Lions since 2009. Previously, he had been a defensive quality control coach under Herman Edwards with the Kansas City Chiefs.
A Texas alum, Roberts is also a graduate of Harvard Law School. His unique journey from the brink of a promising law career to a rising star in the football coaching ranks was profiled in ESPN The Magazine last May.
If Roberts is indeed headed to Morgantown, he will replace Lonnie Galloway, the former outside receivers coach who left earlier in March to take the same job at Wake Forest.
