WVU Varsity Sports Update

Senior Chelsea Carrier has been named WVU Student-Athlete of the Week for her efforts in the 100-meter hurdles at the Jesse Owens Track Classic hosted by Ohio State last weekend.

The Buckhannon, W.Va., native broke her own school record in the event with a time of 12.97. The mark beat her previous record of 13.04 set in the heptathlon at the Texas Relays earlier this month.

She also placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.91. It is her fourth WVU Student- Athlete of the Week selection this season.

This Week in Baseball

The WVU baseball team will take on Akron in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, April 26 at Hawley Field at 7 p.m. … the team will then travel to Plymouth Meeting, Pa., for a three-game Big East series at Villanova from April 29-May 1 … Friday's game begins at 3:15 p.m., while Saturday starts at 1:15 p.m. and Sunday's finale starts at 12:15 p.m.

Last Week in Baseball

The squad went 2-1 last week, defeating Seton Hall in game one (6-3) and game three (3-2), but falling in game two (5-3).

Notes and Quotes

Redshirt seniors Grant Buckner and Mark Dvoroznak led the team offensively with 5-for-9 series performances … Buckner also scored three runs with one double, one home run and three RBIs … Dvoroznak scored two runs and had one RBI … sophomore Brady Wilson went 4-for-10 with one run and two doubles … senior Andy Berry improved his record to 5-2 with 8.1 innings pitched on Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits … freshman Harrison Musgrave also earned a victory with seven innings pitched, allowing two earned runs on five hits, while also striking six … freshman reliever Ryan Tezak made two appearances and pitching 2.2 innings, recording two saves and allowing just one hit.

"What I was really happy with is our guys got in early and worked on our hitting and bunting before the game," coach Greg Van Zant said. "Coach (Pat) Sherald took all of the hitters over to the Indoor Practice Facility and set up a couple of bunting and hitting stations and the inning that we scored runs we got some big bunts down that we didn't get down yesterday."

The Mountaineers wrap up their season April 28-30 as they travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete at the 2011 Big East Championships.

The Mountaineers finished with a regular season record of 8-12, while going 4-5 in Big East action ... at last year's Big East tournament, No. 8 seed WVU tied for fifth with Marquette, Louisville and Rutgers ... the Mountaineers fought through the first round with a 4-2 victory over No. 9 seed Cincinnati ... WVU fell, 0-5, in the second round to Notre Dame, who went on to take first overall in the championship.

Although we did not have the chance to run official races, the trip was definitely worthwhile for our team. Given the limited time we've had on the water in the past two weeks, the format was more beneficial to us than the planned 2k races. Instead of just twelve minutes of racing, our crews spent a total of twenty minutes at race pace alongside rival crews." - Coach Jimmy King

West Virginia prepares for the Big East Championships this weekend splitting competition between the Penn Relays and the Ashland Invitational … the Mountaineers will race the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams, as well as see junior Meghan Mock compete in the long jump at the Penn Relays, while the throwers travel to the Ashland Invitational.

WVU finished the Jesse Owens Track Classic hosted by Ohio State, with several personal-best showings … senior Chelsea Carrier continued to dominate the 100-meter hurdle event, breaking her own second record with a first-place finish and a time of 12.97 … also performing, sophomore Jordan Hamric finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a Big East Championship time of 10:56.31, while junior Terina Miller posted a personal-best performance in the women's hammer throw after clearing 52.16 meters, good for ninth place.

Senior April Rotilio had a good finish in the 200-meter dash, coming in fifth place with a time of 24.34 … WVU's jumpers also finished a high note as Katelyn Williams and Sydney Cummings placed third (1.70 meters) and fourth (1.70 meters), respectively, in the high jump, and Katlyn Shelar finished fourth (3.55 meters) and Lindsey Kopenhaver finished sixth (3.55 meter) in the pole vault … Kate Harrison led the Mountaineers in the 1,500-meter race with a third-place finish (4.29.05), while Kaitlyn Gillespie followed in fifth (4:31.01) and Sarah-Anne Brault placed 10th (4:35.07) … all times qualifying for the Big East Championships.
