In 2007, WVU defeated Auburn 88-59 in the Big East/SEC Invitational, as it was then known. This year's expanded event, re-branded as the Big East/SEC Challenge, will include 12 games from Dec. 1-3. West Virginia will travel to Mississippi State on Saturday, Dec. 3 -- one of four cross-conference games scheduled for that day. A tip-off time has not yet been set.
The game will be West Virginia's second all-time against the Bulldogs. The Mountaineers knocked off MSU 63-62 in the semifinals of the 2007 NIT. West Virginia followed up that victory with a win over Clemson to claim the NIT championship.
West Virginia is 24-27 all-time against SEC schools, but has fared well in recent meetings. While the Mountaineers did drop their most recent cross-league match-up against Kentucky, they are 4-0 in meetings prior to that, with wins over the Wildcats, Vanderbilt and Mississippi (twice). WVU is 7-4 in its last 11 meetings against SEC teams.
ESPN will provide exclusive coverage of all 12 games across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. In next year's event, the SEC teams that hosted games this year will go on the road against 12 of the 17 Big East teams. That round of games will be played Nov. 29 - Dec. 1.
