5-1 Win Gives WVU Series Over Irish

Behind the outstanding pitching effor of Zac Cline, West Virginia downed Notre Dame 5-1 on Sunday to take the three game series by a 2-1 margin.

Cline (9-3) was outstanding, allowing only six hits and one earned run in pitching another complete game for WVU. Cline struck out eight Notre Dame batters and walked only one, and allowed only a solo run in the seventh inning. Cline faced only two batters over the minimum through the first six innings.

The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the third inning, as Lee Frtiz plated Travis D'Amico with a groundout RBI. WVU then continued their season long homer assault, as Jake Serfass and Grant Psomas belted solo shots for the Mountaineers in the fifth and sxith innings, respectively, to give WVU a 3-0 lead.

The Irish then mounted their most serious scoring threat of the game, loading the bases with one out in the seventh. However, Notre Dame was only able to score on run on a sacrifice fly as Cline bore down to get out of the sticky situation.

West Virginia the added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. With two outs and no one on, the Mountaineers got two runners aboard, both of whom scored on D'Amico's two run single.

Serfass, Psomas and Travis D'Amico all had two hits for West Virginia.

The win moves WVU into a tie with the Irish at at 14-4. Rutgers, which had a single game with UConn on Sunday, was 14-4 coming into today's action.
