It might be hard to believe, but Geno Smith's 65 pass attempts against LSU only tied the Big East single-game record in that category. Whose record did Smith match?

West Virginia's Don Nehlen Quarterback Scholarship Weekend hopes to raise $1 million to endow two scholarships for the position, according to Matt Borman, the Mountaineer Athletic Club's Director of Major Gifts.

"We have been working on this project for a long time, and it has been a huge one," he said. "This is the first step in our new program for endowing scholarships."

With scholarship costs rising, the MAC is working on new ways and means of raising money to support the approximately 350 scholarships currently awarded by WVU.

The weekend is scheduled to include appearances by 26 former Mountaineer signalcallers.

West Virginia hasn't used a lot of motion offensively this year, but against LSU the Mountaineers used a long motion sequence on several occasions, bringing a wideout all the way across the formation. The move was used to get a reaction from LSU's defensive alignment, but that doesn't mean it will be in evidence this weekend. Every defense has its own quirks and tendencies, so it could be that the motion series will go back into the bag.

The Falcons have beaten a nationally ranked team four times in school history, with three of those coming in the last eight seasons. BGSU downed No. 25 Pittsburgh (2008), No. 12 Northern Illinois (2003), No. 16 Purdue (2003) and No. 18 Purdue (1972). Only the Northern Illinois win came inside Doyt Perry Stadium.

The Falcons also have 23 non-conference wins in the last decade, including victories over Missouri (twice), Kansas, Purdue and Minnesota.

While many defenses have special names for one or two positions (think West Virginia's Spur and Bandit, or Penn State's Hero) Bowling Green features four such appelations. One of the Falcon linebackers is termed the Buck while the three safeties are called the Whip, the Rover and the Stud.

Bowling Green features a wide receiver named Steve Dunlap, who hasn't caught a pass this year but does have five special teams tackles and returns kickoffs. Will he get more attention from jhis counterpart, WVU defensive coordinator Steve Dunlap?

The Falcons also have two players with the same name as former Mountaineers: Tim Love and Dwayne Woods. WVU's versions were defensive lineman Tim Love (1998-2002) and running back Dwayne Woods (1973-76).

Louisville's Brian Brohm fired 65 passes on Sept. 22, 2007, against Syracuse. He completed 45 for 555 yards. Smith completed 38 (fourth behind Brohm's mark) for 463 yards (sixth) and two touchdowns against the Tigers.
