Smith Confirms Hire

Mike Smith, once a linebacker at Texas Tech when Dana Holgorsen was on the coaching staff there, confirmed via text message on Wednesday morning that he has agreed to reunite with Holgorsen as an assistant at West Virginia University.

"Yes, I'm joining Dana's staff," Smith said in a text message.

Football Scoop and CBSSports.com's Bruce Feldman first reported Tuesday that Smith, who spent this past season serving as a defensive intern for the New York Jets, would become a Mountaineer assistant.

His position, like that of Joe DeForest on the rebuilt Mountaineer defensive staff, was not immediately clear. When asked what his role would encompass, Smith replied: "Once I get with Dana and talk with him, I'll let you know."

Both of Tuesday's reports indicated Smith would coach linebackers, which has been his position of emphasis with the Jets head coach under Rex Ryan. Ryan was Smith's defensive coordinator during a brief NFL playing career with the Baltimore Ravens.

But the New York Daily News Jets beat reporter Manish Mehta indicated Smith's role at WVU may be more significant than just coaching linebackers. Mehta reported that sources indicated Smith would serve as a co-defensive coordinator.

That chance, Mehta reported, was why Smith opted to come to West Virginia after spurning an offer from his former head coach, Mike Leach, to coach linebackers at Washington State.

Smith said he will be in Morgantown on Thursday and should know more about his duties at that point.
