Utley scored a goal and assisted on the gamewinner yesterday, accomplished in only 62 minutes of work. A St. Louis, native, Utley logged only 13 minutes on Friday against La Salle before making her first collegiate start against the Catamounts. Utley is one of nine Mountaineers to see their first action in a Gold and Blue uniform.

The Mountaineers went 1-1-0 last week, dropping their season opener to La Salle, 2-1, on Aug. 17 and defeating Western Carolina, 2-1, on Aug. 19 … leading 1-0, 20th-ranked West Virginia allowed two second half goals in a span of six minutes in its loss to La Salle, 2-1 … the Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead into the half behind a quick goal from defender Bry McCarthy, less than two minutes into the match … despite two goals allowed, WVU goalkeeper Sara Keane played very well, finishing with five spectacular saves … La Salle registered 12 second half shots on its way to outshooting WVU 14-9 on the night … a game-winning goal from forward Kate Schwindel in the 83rd minute pushed WVU past visiting Western Carolina … with the score tied at 1-1, forward Katie Utley tracked down a ball on the right side and sent a cross into the middle to Schwindel … the sophomore struck a ball off the right post and into the back of the net to make it 2-1 with under seven minutes to play … the Mountaineers built a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute off the foot of Utley … Schwindel led all players with a career-high eight shots, and forced a lot of action in the second half … WVU finished with a 24-6 edge in shots.
