Big 12 Preview - Week 4

Half of the league rests up this week in anticipation of the tough conference schedule to come, but there are still some intriguing games in the last big weekend of non-conference action in the Big 12.

STREAKING

Despite a smallish ten-team roster, the Big 12 is the only conference with eight undefeated teams, and has three squads ranked among the top five for longest current win streak - 1. TCU (W10), 2. Baylor (W8) and T5. West Virginia (W6).

TOP TO (ALMOST) BOTTOM

Nine Big 12 teams are either ranked or receiving votes in both national polls. Rated squads include Oklahoma, West Virginia, Texas, K-State, TCU and Oklahoma State. The nine teams are no lower than 37th in either the Coaches' or AP Polls.

BREAKING EVEN?

The Big 12 is 24-26 all-time vs. the ACC, but the league newcomers could help the old guard even that mark. West Virginia (vs. Maryland) and TCU (vs. Virginia) could level the all-time record with wins on Saturday.

MORE OPTIONS

The recently announced 13-year television agreement with Fox and ESPN gives the Big 12 more chances to get their games on national broadcasts, and guarantees that every home Big 12 football game will be available for telecast. While the pecking order in selecting games between the two networks was tough to hammer out, its successful conclusion will put the Big 12 on more TV sets, and in more outlets, than ever before.

Six league teams will be available for viewing nationally next week, including Baylor at West Virginia on FX, Texas Tech at Iowa State on Fox College Sports and Texas at Oklahoma State on Fox.

PICKS

Things start getting a little tougher this week, but it's nothing like the shape of things to come when all ten league foes will be battling each other on a weekly basis.

  • Baylor travels to Louisiana Monroe for a Friday night contest that has upset written all over it. ULM has played very well this year, and no doubt the Warhawk faithful will be primed. A student pep rally was held on Thursday night, and head coach Todd Berry's team is legit. This one seems too easy, though, so Baylor is the pick -- but in a hotly contested game.

  • Virginia travels to TCU, and even though the Horned Frogs just lost their starting running back for the season, Virginia doesn't appear to have enough offense to contend with the #16 team in the country. Texas Christian remains undefeated and atop the league's points allowed standings.

  • Maryland has a young offense that is struggling to find consistency. West Virginia's is humming like Doc Brown's DeLorean. The Terps will play hard, but don't figure to be able to match the Mountaineers score-for-score.

  • Kansas travels to Northern Illinois as a decided underdog, and until the Wildcats show some signs of life, even a lower-conference match-up can't be viewed with anything other than trepidation. Northern Illinois gets the win at home.

  • The feature game of the week comes Saturday night. Oklahoma is at home, but something about the Kansas State rushing attack, and quarterback Collin Klein, calls attention. The Wildcats are the upset selection of the week in front of a national TV audience.
