RECORD CHANCE

WVU won't set many offensive records this year, but Charles Sims has a chance to break at least one. Coming into the Kansas game, the senior transfer has 41 receptions, which trails Mickey Walczak's season catch record for running backs by eight. Walczak had 49 catches in 1991.

The running back pass reception yardage total is probably safe, though. Jim Braxton had 565 yards on 27 catches in 1970 (that's almost 21 yards per catch!). Sims has 342 yards to date.

HOLD ON

West Virginia has lost 14 fumbles this year. Only Maryland, with 15, has bounced it away more on the ground. The biggest part of that problem has been WVU's quarterbacks, who have had several problems with ball security.

That number could be far worse, as the Mountaineers have dropped the rock 26 times in 10 games.

JERSEY COMBINATIONS

West Virginia's game notes provide a breakdown of the team's record when wearing each different jersey\pants color combinations since 2001. It doesn't include helmet colors in those reports, although options thee have been available in 2012 (gray) and 2013 (blue, white and gold).

The Mountaineers also added another twist against Texas, when it used blue facemasks on its white helmets. Previously this year, WVU's white helmets were paired with white facemasks. Swapping out facemasks and the throwback helmet decals certainly made for some extra work for the managers on the staff, but it also ratcheted up the possible uniform combinations by a large factor. If pants, jerseys, helmets and facemasks are all available for mix and match, West Virginia's current uniform combination possibilities now stand at 54.

NO SURPRISE

As might be expected in this game, the punters could be stars of the show.

West Virginia's Nick O'Toole and Kansas Tevor Pardula are battling for honors as the league's top booter. Pardula is first in the Big 12 and fifth nationally with a 45.4 yards per punt average, while O'Toole is second and twentieth, respectively, at 43.4.

In net punting, it's O'Toole in the lead, and fifth nationally, with a 40.92 yards per punt average, while Pardula is second and 12th at 40.36. Pardula has dropped 20 kicks inside the 20-yard line while putting just five in the end zone, but O'Toole is even better, having placed the same number inside the 20 while kicking only three for touchbacks.

LACK OF INTEREST

It has to be tough playing football at Kansas. Outside of the team's current struggles, there's also the shadow of Jayhawk basketball looming over campus. KU football has merely been a placeholder in recent years, providing a bit of diversion before the start of basketball season. A quick survey of media covering Kansas shows only a dribble of football coverage, while hoops are splashed across the pages daily. The disparity was even more severe this week, what with the big early season showdown with Duke and the ridiculous overhyping of freshman Andrew Wiggins.

ONE YEAR

Ivan McCartney has caught 68 passes in his West Virginia career. 49 of those came in 2011. He caught one pass in 2010, nine last year and nine this season.
