WVU Varsity Sports Update

On the heels of her third straight all-around victory, senior Hope Sloanhoffer has been named the West Virginia Varsity Sports Athlete of the Week.

The Cornwall, N.Y., native scored 39.325 in the Mountaineers' win over George Washington and Towson on Feb. 2 at the WVU Coliseum. The reigning Big 12 Gymnast of the Week, she also finished first on bars (9.825), beam (9.825) and floor (9.875). The beam score is a season best. Additionally, Sloanhoffer also scored 9.8 on vault, good enough for third place.

Sloanhoffer now shows 1,524.725 career points and ranks No. 15 in the Mountaineer record book.

WVU scored a season-high 195.5 in its winning effort in the second annual "Wendy M. Roach Invitational" Pink Meet.

WVU will face Kansas State at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the WVU Coliseum … Saturday's game is a United Bank Dollar Day with admission set at $1 courtesy of United Bank … the Mountaineers will also be celebrating Alumni Weekend, recognizing women's basketball alum in attendance … Saturday is Superhero Day and Coke Zero will provide superhero masks to the first 1,500 fans.

The Mountaineers went 2-0 last week in Big 12 play, defeating No. 23/21 Iowa State 67-56 at the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday and taking a 66-62 win at TCU on Saturday … senior center Asya Bussie recorded a pair of consecutive double-doubles as she had 14 points and 11 rebounds against the Cyclones and 19 points and a career-best 15 rebounds at TCU.

Coach Craig Turnbull: "Going into the match, we thought if we could win two at 133, 141 and 149 pounds, then we would have a chance. We did not wrestle very smart at a couple of weight classes though. Colin Johnston and Mike Morales winning was very important for them individually and developing their resumes for the national tournament."

The teams have concluded their regular season. WVU's next competition is the Big 12 Championships, which will take place from Feb. 26-Mar. 1 in Austin, Texas.

The men's team traveled to No. 9 Ohio State, while the women's team traveled to Ohio in a meet that included Iowa State ... the men's team lost to the Buckeyes 151-99 ... the women lost to Ohio 197.5-96.5 and to Iowa State 200-93.

In the men's meet, senior Bryce Bohman tallied another win in the 100 back with a time of 48.30 … in the 100 free, junior Tim Squires finished third (46.12) and sophomore Andrew Marsh finished fourth (46.61) … in the 200 back, Bohman scored his second win of the day with a time of 1:47.76 … the individual events closed out with the 200 IM, where freshman Nate Carr scored the win for the Mountaineers with a time of 1:52.17. In the women's meet, the action started with the 400 medley relay, where the "A" team of sophomore Jaimee Gillmore and juniors Jenelle Zee, Julie Ogden and Courtney Parenti placed third with a time of 3:54.94 … in the 1650 free, freshman Emma Skelley placed second with a time of 17:17.24 … in the 100 breast, Zee finished second with a time of 1:05.44 … in the 200 fly, Ogden scored the win for the team with a time of 2:06.13, while sophomore Natalie Johnsen finished third with a time of 2:08.41.

Coach Vic Riggs: "It was a very solid effort by the men tonight. We had several great races and relays. Bryce continues to compete at the highest level and it's only going to pay off for him at the end of the season. Along with Bryce we had several other individuals at in-season best times."

The Mountaineers travel to Akron, Ohio, for the Akron Invitational on Friday, Feb. 7 ... it will be a two-day meet with competition concluding on the evening of Saturday, Feb. 8.

West Virginia took a small group of competitors to the PSU National in State College, Pa ... the two-day meet had teams from the entire East coast participating, serving as the largest indoor meet in the country over the weekend.
