Poolesville (Md.) High Jon Bateky's recruitment has been somewhat of a whirlwind the last week. Just shortly after receiving an offer from Rutgers, he added another to his list when West Virginia pulled the trigger.
"My coach actually texted me and told me to call Coach (Lonnie) Galloway," Bateky said, telling of how he learned of the offer. "When I did he told me they wanted to offer me. I was pretty excited about it. It kind of came as a surprise because I haven't talked to them much. It was maybe like a year ago when I really last spoke with them."
"Things have been good with my recruitment lately," he continued. "This offer makes two in a week, plus my Western Michigan offer. Hopefully more will come, too."
While speaking with Galloway, the Mountaineer assistant urged Bateky to visit soon so the rest of the staff could speak with him in person.
"Coach Galloway told me he wants to see me in person," Bateky said. "He told me he'd like for me to come visit West Virginia and see what they're all about. I hope to get up there before the summer or during the summer. I hope to see in person what it's about."
"I don't know much about West Virginia now, though," he said. "I know they play in the Big 12 and have a pretty rich history in football."
Holding offers from West Virginia, Rutgers and Western Michigan, Bateky also claims interest from Maryland, Duke and Old Dominion. Despite the increased attention, though, he plans to take his time with the recruitment process.
"I'm just trying to stay focused," Bateky said. "I want to focus on my team, which is most important. When the time comes I'll look more closely to the schools looking at me."
As a junior, Bateky recorded 70 tackles, including 10 sacks, seven forced fumbles and seven pass break-ups.
