Back(s) In Force

West Virginia's deepest position showcased its mix of size, quickness and power in this duo of drills focusing on ball security and footwork during the opening day of fall camp on Thursday.

First up, WVU's plethora of players hones in on the power game and ball security as position coach JaJuan Seider uses pads to mimic defenders. All the backs took snaps, including Wendell Smallwood (4), third up in this video. In order: Dustin Garrison (29), Dreamius Smith (2), Smallwood, Maurice Zereoue (31), Rushel Shell (7), Eric Pittman (25), Andrew Buie (13), Elijah Wellman (28) and Donte Thomas-Williams (8). Note the size and physical variations between the backs, and the vast skillsets they can combine to bring to inarguably the deepest backfield during the Dana Holgorsen era.

Thomas-Williams seems especially developed for his age, and Pittman shows excellent footwork. Buie, too, seems to have added a touch of quickness, with Smallwood and Smith the clear cut favorites for key touches.

Here, footwork and proper body control is paramount, with a few players struggling during the session. Most, however, seem to breeze through the exercise with solid focus and good balance and foot placement.
