A Look Inside: Kickoff Drills

West Virginia got right into a special teams session, working kickoff coverage and return at the start of its eighth practice of the fall camp.

The Mountaineers lacked some desired continuity, especially in the communication phase between Wendell Smallwood (4) and Jordan Thompson (10), which caused a fumble. But for the most part, the session appeared clean and players were in their lanes as instructed. Effort to the whistle, as assistant Joe DeForest harps upon at one point, is always a key. JaJuan Seider provides some instruction on the "wall" blockers, while Lonnie Galloway works directly with the deep men.

It's worth noting that the Mountaineers used a variety of players, including, obviously, Smallwood, Thompson, Mario Alford, Daryl Worley, Rushel Shell, Dravon Henry and Daikiel Shorts, among others. The returns will seem long, as the Mountaineers did not take to the deck, and the focus was as much on sustained blocking as it was a slight thud up of the returner. WVU was in helmets and shoulder pads, not full gear.
