Big 12 Football Preview: Week Four

Only four league teams are in action this week, but a big conference clash and a huge intersectional matchup make this anything but a week to ignore in the Big 12.

GOING LIGHT

Six teams are off this week, with two (Texas Tech and Oklahoma State) prepping for a conference tilt on Thursday, Sept. 25. Kansas and Kansas State have a pair of out of conference foes, while West Virginia and Oklahoma meet in the first league contest of 2014 for both schools.

MAKING STRIDES

Iowa State has earned three of the nine player of the week award bestowed by the league during the first three weeks of the season. The Cyclone honorees included WR JArvis West, DE Cory Morrissey and PK Colke Netten. West Virginia (WR Mario Alford, QB Clint Trickett) is the only other school to have multiple winners.

MODELS OF EFFICIENCY

Baylor quarterbacks hold down the first and second spots in the league pass efficiency ratings. Starter Bryce Petty's two-game mark of 182.9 is good for only second place in the rankings. Backup Seth Russel, who has appeared in all three games, holds a sparkling 205.3 mark.

PICKS

  • Kansas State hosts Auburn in the spotlight of Thursday night, and it's very tempting to pick the Wildcats in a home upset. The feeling is that the Tigers will best the Wildcats in a close game, but don't be surprised if Bill Snyder's troops are able to spring an ambush.

  • Kansas faces Central Michigan in the most non-descript game of the week. CMU owns a win over moribund Purdue, but was waxed by Syracuse a week ago while missing two of its top offensive threats. If they return, that should be enough to topple the Jayhawks.

  • Oklahoma travels to West Virginia in the league lidlifter for both teams. The Sooners will test WVU's quick passing game with a pressure-filled defense, and figures to create enough havoc to get the win over the Mountaineers.
