Big 12 Football Preview: Week Five

Conference play swings into high gear this week with three matchups, including a Thursday night prime time affair between a pair of 2-1 squads.

GAINING RESPECT

Six of the league's ten teams are either ranked in the Top 25 or receiving votes in national polls. Oklahoma (3) , Baylor (6) and Kansas State (25) are in the former group, while Oklahoma State, TCU and West Virginia hold spots in the latter.

BREAKING THE MOLD

Baylor is viewed as all passing an little else, but that's a false assessment. The Bears lead the league in rushing, averaging 238 yards per game, and also top league standings in rushing defense, yielding just 64.3 yards per contest.

PERFECT

Through the first four weeks of the season, no league team has missed an extra point. Combined, Big 12 teams are 129 -129 this year.

PICKS

  • In a Thursday night battle to get a leg up in the league standings, Oklahoma State figures to have enough offensive firepower, and enough defensive chops, to handle Texas Tech. The Red Raiders will probably knock off an upper division team in the league at some point this year -- but not this one.

  • Kansas State has to be kicking itself after booting away numeours golden chances to beat Auburn. It will take out its frustrations on visiting UTEP in an early start.

  • TCU makes one of the shortest road trips of the year to battle SMU in another early Saturday start. Wakeup alarms won't be necessary for the Horned Frogs in this bitter battle -- they'll come away with a relatively easy win.

  • Were it any other league team, Texas might be facing another trap on the road. Being as it is Kansas, the Longhorns get the nod. At some point, UT figures to turn the corner in the transition period under new head coach Charlie Strong, but it might be difficult to make a realistic assessment after this game.

  • Baylor travels to Iowa State for the league's showcase game on Fox in primetime. They'll hog most of the storyline, and most of the highlights, in another win.
