Big 12 Football Preview: Week Nine

If last week held Separation Saturday in the Big 12 Conference, this week's action might be termed "Staying Power Saturday".

CHANCE TO RECOVER

All four league teams with open dates this week will spend it mulling a loss from the previous Saturday. Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas and Oklahoma will all look to bounce back with the turn of the calendar to November.

BUNCH FORMATION

TCU, the Big 12's top ranked team in the two major(?) polls, is fifth in the league standings. Oklahoma, which appeared to have the inside track to the title just a couple of weeks ago, is now sixth. Even the teams without a league win (Iowa State and Texas Tech) extended their opponents to the limit a week ago.

Whether this is the result of high level play across the board or mediocrity is in the eye of the beholder (and the keyboards of the spinmeisters trying to support their own agendas) but one result is an excellent Saturday full of exciting games in the league.

NO ANOMALY

Last year, home field advantage wasn't prevalent in league games, and this year that pattern seems to be holding. Visitors have won eight of the 18 conference matchups so far, displaying the relative balance of so many Big 12 teams.

PICKS

  • Kansas State will look to protect its spot atop the conference against visiting Texas. The Longhorns are showing progress, but the sound Wildcats don't figure to make the mistakes that let the Horns eke out a win over Iowa State. K-State gets the call, but don't be surprised to see a good effort from UT.

  • West Virginia is coming off two huge, emotional wins. Oklahoma State was throttled by TCU a week ago. Yet, the Cowboys are a narrow favorite at home according to the oddsmakers. T. Boone Pickens stadium is a tough venue when the crowd is up, and one loss doesn't have the Cowboys out of the conference race by any stretch. In the closest of all calls, the Mountaineers have the edge, but this one shapes up to be a tough battle.

  • Texas Tech has a good offense that shoots itself in the foot at times, and a shaky defense. TCU is very good on both sides of the ball, and figures to overpower the visiting Red Raiders.
