WVU Gives Pegues A Family Feeling On Visit

West Virginia hosted a top junior college defensive end this past weekend who’s already pledged his services elsewhere. Did the Mountaineers do enough to work themselves back into the picture?

West Virginia had always envisioned being involved in the recruitment of Itawamba (MS) junior college defensive end Xavier Pegues. But to what extreme became in question earlier this month when the stout defender committed to Iowa State.

The Mountaineers' hopes rose once again earlier this week when Pegues announced he’d take an official visit to WVU this past weekend for its matchup against TCU.

“It was awesome,” Pegues emphatically described the visit. “It was a great trip.”

The Mountaineers have used the mantra “team” and “family” all season as a program and that was sincerely felt by Pegues while on his visit.

“Family was first for them and that’s what I like,” Pegues said. “I got a daughter and my fiancé is coming with me. It made me and my girl feel at home this weekend, that’s for sure. The football team has a great program, too. “

Despite bad weather conditions the Mountaineer faithful came out in strong support, something that caught the eye of Pegues.

“I loved the atmosphere,” Pegues said. “The fans are ride or die. I have never seen a game with fans so loud and crazy. They got a support system behind them. Even with the bad weather not a fan left the stadium. They just got their rain jacket out. WVU is definitely a great place to be.”

So where do the Mountaineers now stand in his recruitment?

“I’m still committed to Iowa State, there has been no de-commitment,” Pegues explained. “But my options to go look other places was always open. Like I said WVU is a great place to be for anyone. My girl is going to see Iowa State soon and we will go from there.”
