Big 12 Football Preview: Week Twelve

Four Big 12 football teams get a break to prepare for the final sprint of league action, leaving six teams to square off this Saturday.

QUALIFICATION BOUT

Texas and Oklahoma State have a border showdown for bowl eligibility. Each team has five wins, and is looking for the magic sixth to qualify for post season play. Neither has an easy road past this contest, with TCU on the Horns' slate and Baylor and Oklahoma remaining for the Cowboys, so this one is qualifies as the game of the week, as well as a potential season-defining one for both squads.

CONVERSION FACTOR

Baylor has successfully converted 23 of 30 fourth down chances this year, earning a rate of 76.7%. While the Bears might have had an abnormally high number of short yardage chances, or situations in which going for it was the clear choice, it is also evident that head coach Art Briles isn't afraid to go against the book in some situations. Kansas State and TCU have been the most conservative, each attempting just nine fourth-down conversions this year.

SEASON GRIND

No Big 12 player is averaging more than 100 yards rushing per game, and only Shock Linwood of Baylor (96.0) is above the 90-yard plateau.

PICKS

  • TCU and Kansas are both coming off wins, and the Jayhawks have to be riding high after...no, not a chance. The Horned Frogs defend their current spot in the CFP with a win on the road.

  • Oklahoma's drop-off is a bit puzzling, but the view from afar leads to a reasonable conclusion. The Sooners are a solid team, but aren't Top 25 material, having lost all three of its meetings with members of that group. The game against Texas Tech is simply one of motivation -- OU has a bowl secured, while another Red Raider loss eliminates them from consideration. We'll go with the Sooners once more, but confidence in their ability is waning.

  • Texas and Oklahoma State face off in the aforementioned bowl-qualification game. If the Cowboys had more offensive weapons than just Tyreek Hill, they'd get the nod at home, but it will be tough for them to score the 20 or so points they would need to win. The Longhorns are the unenthusiastic pick.
