Big 12 Football Preview: Week Thirteen

Kansas State tries to hold on to a share of the Big 12 conference lead while other teams jockey for position as the football schedule comes down to the final three weeks.

SELF SCOUT

WHile Texas Tech's reputation as a gunslinging offense is undeniable, perhaps head coach Kliff Kingsbury might want to pull the ball down a few times. The Red Raiders are averaging 5.1 yards per rush this year, which rails only Oklahoma and TCU among league teams. They haven't taken full advantage of that, however, as they have run the ball just 289 times -- fewer than any other Big 12 school outside of Iowa State.

DOWN TO THE WIRE

In each season since round robin play began, the Big 12 champion was determined in the last week of the season on Championship Saturday. If games hold true to form, that should be the case again this year, as Baylor faces Kansas State on Dec. 6.

PICKS

  • West Virginia tries to break a two-game losing streak with a home Thursday night game against Kansas State, but the Wildcats look to be too sound for the up-and-down Mountaineers to overcome. K-State is the pick to win and all but lock up an Alamo Bowl bid.

  • Kansas has shown renewed vigor of late, knocking off Iowa State and taking TCU to the wire. Oklahoma may have to rely on its running game again, which will be heading into the teeth of a good Jayhawk defense. Still, it's tough to pick against the Sooners at home, so OU gets the narrow call.

  • Texas Tech saw a bit of drama played out this week, as a former defensive assistant was accused of providing signals to opponents. Even if true, that doesn't account for all of the Red Raiders' struggles this season. Iowa State picks up its first league win of the season in a mild upset.

  • Oklahoma State is desperate for one more win to reach bowl eligibility. It's defense won't be up to the task against a Baylor team trying to impress the CFP Selection Committee. The Bears roll at home.
