Offensive Trio Discusses Practice

After a subpar offensive showing in last week's open practice at Shepherd College, West Virginia returned home on Saturday and displayed more productivity on that side of the ball in open scrimmage work.

Wendell Smallwood only had one carry in the team's scrimmage, but it went for a touchdown as he skirted the right side for a score. The versatile running back is going to have a lot on his shoulders this year as the offense will look to add him to the passing game as well. Smallwood will compete for playing time with Rushel Shell, who is also getting more work catching the ball out of the backfield. So far, Smallwood has seen improvement in his play.

Daikiel Shorts has officially been moved to the outside wide receiver position. Shorts came to WVU as an outside reciever, but was pushed inside when he first arrived. Now he is back to his original position, and showed why he can be a threat there. During Saturday's scrimmage, Shorts caught three touchdown passes. It is a long way until the start of the season, but Shorts has certainly grabbed the attention of the coaching staff, and has placed himself squarely in the mix on the boundary.

Skyler Howard did a lot of good things during the team's scrimmage on Saturday. The dual-threat QB has the ability to run, and West Virginia will use that not only on a handful of designed carries, but also in moving the pocket to aovid the rush and get better passing angles on certain plays.
