Martell Pettaway, the Scout.com three-star player and the 30th-rated running back in the 2016 class, became the latest of JaJuan Seider’s recruiting pick-ups, giving the Mountaineers a verbal to become the 13th player in a rapidly developing class. Pettaway, at 5-9, 190 pounds, is a solidly built power back with decent burst who was already gaining major offers in December of 2014 with looks from Michigan State, Iowa, Illinois, Vanderbilt and many non-power five programs as well.
Pettaway visited West Virginia and Pitt in early April, eventually deciding on the Mountaineers out of Detroit’s Martin Luther King High, near Saint Clair Shores, Mich. While that’s about as far outside the normal recruiting area as possible for the Mountaineers, the visit to Morgantown elevated the program into his top three, and WVU eventually gained the verbal today.
Pettaway shows good balance and strength, and adds to a strong legacy of solid running back prospects at West Virginia. The back doesn’t have the longest stride, and at times runs more upright than one would like, but has noticeable strength, vision and cutting ability, and continues to gain the tough yardage at the end of runs. Pettaway ranks as the Scout.com fifth-best at his position in the Midwest, and the second-best running back in Michigan. BlueGoldNews.com will have more with Pettaway soon.
