West Virginia's Scholarship Offer Excites S.C. Running Back

West Virginia has rarely recruited South Carolina in recent years, but an offer to one of the state's top running backs has him excited, and perhaps provides a foreshadowing to more activity in the Palmetto State for WVU.

West Virginia has offered a scholarship to 2018 RB Mataeo Durant of McCormick High School in McCormick, S.C.

Right now, Durant has three offers from Power Five schools: Mississippi State, Wake Forest and West Virginia. He really likes the Gamecocks but they have not offered him yet. He also has offers from Georgia State and Old Dominion.

Durant rushed for 1,275 yds and 16 TDs on 116 attempts in 2016, and also recorded 74 tackles, with nine of those accounting for lost yardage. He also recorded four sacks, and piled up all of those numbers in just six games. He is also a member of the National Honor Society so qualifying should not be a problem.

"I was so excited to get the offer," Durant told "I was at my house with my friends when I found out I had been offered, and I got up and screamed 'YESSSSS!'. They said 'Bro, what's wrong?' and I said 'West Virginia just offered me!' I felt amazing. They are a great program and I have a lot of interest in them and in their academic and athletic programs."

West Virginia has offered very few athletes from South Carolina in the modern era. So it remains to be seen if this is a “one off” situation, or a trend in the state with WVU's reshuffling of coaches and recruiting areas.
