On a day filled with defensive standouts, linebacker Grant Wiley surpassed even his normal superlative standards to win our defensive player of the game honors.
Wiley had 13 tackles, including one behind the line, and was involved in three big turnovers. Wiley forced two fumbles and pounced on another, and for good measure broke up a pass that would have resulted in a Bearcat touchdown. Despite staying on the field all day while Cincinnati had 85 snaps, Wiley was the linchpin of the Mountaineer defense that kept the team in the game.
Offensively, the pickings were much slimmer. Travis Garvin gets the award, based largely on his 48 yard jaunt with a screen pass for a touchdown. Garvin finished with two catches for 60 yards, and added two carries for another eight yards.
Garvin's yardage accounted for more than 1/4 of the total Mountaineer offensive output on the day.
