Absences of all stripes will affect the football team for both the Miami game and beyond. Not only will both Rick Sherrod and Lew Daniels miss the trip to Florida, but a pair of wide receivers are also apparently missing in action.
Freshman wide receiver Keith Mills, who has sturggled with an injury, reportedly has academic issues and could be a casualty. Additionally, receiver Harold Leath did not make the trip to Notre Dame. His status is still unknown at this time.
All of these losses have put WVU at approximately the level of a 1AA team in terms of scholarship numbers. The Mountaineers just can't afford more attrition, either this season, or in the near future.
A STITCH IN TIME
If the game goes as expected, WVU's best outcome in South Florida might come on Friday and Saturday. Several Mountaineer coaches will stay over an extra day or two to recruit the fertile Sunshine state.
WVU's players have been nothing but complimentary of Miami this week. Of course, some of this is simply avoidance of supplying any bulletin board material, but we have to wonder whether there may be too much respect coming from the Mountaineer camp.
Not that the Hurricanes don't deserve it, but if West Virginia hopes to make any sort of effort to win the game, they can't go into the Orange Bowl in awe of Miami.
