WVU opens with exhibition win

Drew Schifino scored a game-high 24 points and fellow freshman Jonathan Hargett added 20 points Saturday to lead West Virginia to a 103-60 exhibition win over New Zealand Select.

Hargett, a blue-chip point guard named the Big East's Preseason Newcomer of the Year, proved to be as good as advertised with flashy passes and uptempo play. West Virginia's offense ran noticeable better with Hargett at the point as the newcomer created shots for guards and forced the defense to extend with four of six perimeter shooting.

Schifino hit nine of 13 shots from the field and provided solid defense and the scoring punch the Mountaineers have missed the last two seasons.

WVU's three heralded freshman -- Hargett, Schifino and Tyrone Sally -- entered six minutes into the game with WVU ahead 16-14. They accounted for nine of the Mountaineers' next 12 points in a 12-0 spurt that essentially put the game away.

New Zealand never got closer than 10 points afterward.

Schifino and Hargett scored the last nine points of the first half to give WVU it's largest lead at 57-36.

The three freshman accounted for 52 points. Seniors Lionel Armstead and Chris Moss had 20 and 16 points, respectively. New Zealand was led by Damon Rampton's 14 points.
