West Wins NBA Award

West Virginia alumnus Jerry West capped an outstanding season of work with the Memphis Grizzlies by being named the NBA Executive of the Year.

West, the Grizzlies' President of Basketball Operations, won in a runaway. The former Mountaineer, Olympian, and NBA all-time great garnered 16 1/2 of the 35 possible votes. No other executive tallied more than five.

The winner is selected by vote of NBA executives and sponsored by The Sporting News.

The win, West's second, completed a management sweep for the Grizzlies. Memphis head coach Hubie Brown was named Coach of the Year in April.

West has almost totally rebulit the Grizzlies during his two year tenure, aquiring ten new players as well as tabbing Brown as the coach to rebuild the moribund franchise. His moves paid off as Memphis won 50 games and made the playoffs for the first time in team history.

West previously won the award in 1995 as the general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers.
