West Virginia wrestling alumni Dominic Black and Dean Morrison overcame early losses in the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials to post strong finishes, but missed out on a trip to Athens for the Summer Games.
If Black and Morrison hadn't had to face Jon Trenge of the New York Athletic Club, they might have fared much better. Trenge knocked Black out in the opening round by the score of 3-1, then upset the top seeded Morrison 3-0 in the next round.
Morrison and Black both fought back in the consolation rounds to finish in the top five. Morrison gained a bit of revenge by decisioning Trenge 3-1 to grab a third-place finish, while Black finished fifth.
The Trials were the last major competition for Black, as he announced his retirement following his last match.
