Weekend Football Visit Wrapup

The majority of the players in town for weekend football recruiting visits hail from the Buckeye state.

Quarterback Troy Smith. Running backs Deshaun Wynn and Greg Pruitt. Linemen Rick McDole, Jeremy Hines, and Roman Fry. Defensive backs Mike Lorello and Anthony Smith.

All of those Ohio products visited the Mountaineer campus over the past weekend and were treated to the normal recruiting pitch plus an extra.

Those players in town were allowed to attend the WVU football banquet, which gave them another opportunity to mingle with players and coaches for a bonus look at the Mountaineer football program. The banquet didn't pay off with any immediate verbal commitments, but players such as Fry and McDole do seem to have strengthened their opinion of WVU.

Others from outside the Ohio borders that were in included Mountaineer commitments Dwayne Mundle and Durrel Weekly, juco wide receiver Durrell Robinson, and West Virginia native Tank Tunstalle.

One new name on the visit list was QB/WR Andre Sumpter of Englewood High School in Jacksonville, Florida. At 6-0 and 180 pounds, Sumpter is an elusive package of speed who may have gotten a bit lost in the deep pool of talent in the Jacksonville area.

Sumpter, however, has not been overlooked by the Mountaineer staff, who are hitting the Jacksonville area aggressively. (Also on WVU's list in the Jacksonville area is WR Kenneth Tookes.)

The coaching staff also welcomed a couple of prospects that have already committed to other schools.

QB/DB Skyler Green of L.W. Higgins High School in Louisiana, and LB/DE Darel Slay of Holmes Community College in Mississippi were both in town to check out the Mountaineer program.

Green (5-9, 180), who figures to play either wide receiver or defensive back in college, has committed to LSU, while Slay (6-3, 245), one of, if not the, top defensive juco prospects in the country, has verballed to South Carolina.

Neither player appears to be wavering on his commitment, but that doesn't keep the Mountaineer staff from continuing to sell their program to any and all who take the time to look at what West Virginia has to offer.

Next week, Texas is expected to take the spotlight, with several players such as Kevin Flood, Pagitte McGee, Vincent Meeks, Borderick Jones, J.T. Perry and Kellen Tillman reportedly on the visit list.
