WVU Alumni NFL Update - 9/21/04

WVU again had a number of players figure prominently during week two of the NFL season.

Aaron Beasley Def. Back
Class of 1995
Aaron was again pivotal in a Falcons victory, recording 3 tackles including two on special teams. The key play for the Falcons came with Atlanta leading the Rams 31-17 into the 4th quarter. Beasley stepped in front of a Marc BUlger pass that effectively ended any comeback hopes the Rams had. Aaron also recorded another pass break up in the 34-17 win. The 2-0 Falcons host the Arizona Cardinals next week.

Anthony Becht Tight End
Class of 1999
Anthony again went without a reception, but the Jets again ran the ball successfully and put points on the board, beating the Chargers 34-28. Anthony and the offensive line again led the way for Curtis Martin who had another 100 yard day for the 2-0 Jets. New York has a bye in week 3.

Rich Braham Off Lineman
Class of 1993
Rich pulled himself right before kickoff due to a knee bruise. The Bengals outslugged the Dolphins 16-13 to even their record at 1-1. Rich looks to be back in the lineup next week as the Bengals host the Ravens.

Antonio has been released from the Bills and has not been picked off of waivers as of yet.

John Browning Def. Lineman
Class of 1995
Playing defensive end for the injured Vonnie Holiday, John recorded 7 tackles, but the Chiefs still gave up tons of yards on the ground in the 28-17 loss to the Panthers. John also recorded a sack of Jake Delhomme and forced a fumble. The Chiefs, who fell to 0-2 with the loss, have given up nearly 400 yards on the ground in two games. They'll try to get back on track this coming week as they face the winless Houston Texans.

Marc Bulger Quarterback
Class of 1999
Marc's numbers were practically identical to last weeks', but the Rams had trouble with the rush, both offensively and defensively, and fell in Atlanta, 34-17. Marc was a respectable 24/31 for 285 yards, threw 1 touchdown and 1 interception. However, the offensive line gave up 5 sacks and Marshall Faulk only rushed for 20 yards, which wasn't going to be enough against Michael Vick and the Falcons. St. Louis (1-1) will host the Deuce-less Saints in week 3 action.

James Davis Linebacker

Dirty and the Lions did it again, putting together that elusive winning streak with solid defense. The Lions held the Texans to 112 yards rushing. James recorded 5 tackles, a sack of David Carr and recovered a Domanick Davis fumble in the Lions 28-16 win over the Texans. Detroit moves to 2-0 on the year and will face the Philadelphia Eagles at home this weekend.

Barrett Green Linebacker
Class of 1999
Barrett came up huge in the 2nd quarter of the Giants win over the Redskins Sunday. Green picked up a Clinton Portis fumble and took it 16 yards to the endzone to put the Giants on top, 14-7 and they never looked back. Barrett went on to record 4 tackles and deflect a pass in the win in which the Redskins only managed 108 rushing yards. With the victory, the Giants even up at 1-1, and host the Cleveland Browns this weekend.

Brian has been diagnosed with a herniated disk in his back, and is rehabilitating the injury at the Panthers' practice facility.

Antwan Lake Def. Lineman
Class of 2001
Antwan saw playing time but recorded no tackles in the Falcons 34-17 win over the Rams. Atlanta's defense got to Marc Bulger 5 times for sacks and held former MVP Marshall Faulk to just 20 yards on the ground. This week, the Falcons (2-0) will host the Arizona Cardinals.

Mike saw playing time at safety and recorded 2 special teams tackles in the Steelers 30-13 loss at Baltimore this weekend. The Steelers (1-1), who lost Tommy Maddox for up to 6 weeks with an elbow injury, will try to right the ship next week in Miami.

Jerry had 3 receptions for 45 yards on the afternoon as the Raiders beat the Buffalo Bills 13-10. In a game that saw Jerry Rice not catching a ball for the first time in 19 years, the Raiders evened their record to 1-1, while the Bills dropped to 0-2. Next week, Oakland hosts the 0-2 Buccaneers.

Class of 1994
Todd was key in pinning the Chiefs in their own territory all afternoon and the Panthers up-ended Kansas City 28=17. Todd had 6 punts for an average of 39.8 yards. Two of his kicks went for touchbacks and 2 others pinned the Chiefs offense inside their own 20. The Panthers even their record at 1-1 and have a bye during week 3.

Gary and the Chiefs gave up nearly 200 yards on the ground and lost again 28-17 to the Panthers. Gary had 1 special teams tackle on the night. Kansas City (0-2) will host the Texans (0-2) this weekend.

John had 1 tackle as the Bengals frontline held the hapless Dolphins to 25 yards rushing on 20 carries. Cincinnati wins their first game to move to 1-1. After the 16-13 win, the Bengals host the Ravens in week 3.

Mike hit a 28-yard field goal and nailed all four extra points as the Colts came back to beat the Titans Sunday. Indianapolis goes to 1-1 and will host the Packers this weekend.

Wiley is scheduled for an October 4th checkup on his surgically repaired shoulder. Results of that checkup will determine when he returns to Minnesota to begin rehabilitation.

Amos Zereoue Running Back
Class of 1998
Amos became the Raiders feature back late in the game as Oakland went on to beat the Bills 13-10. Amos rushed 9 times for 24 yards and caught 3 balls for 25 yards in the win. He had 18 of his rushing yards in a pivotal drive during the fourth quarter. During this key drive, Amos helped put the Raiders into position for a 33-yard Sebastian Janikowski field goal that put the game out of reach at 13-3. Oakland (1-1) will host Tampa Bay this weekend.
