WVU Alumni NFL Update - 9/27/04

Week three of the NFL season yielded some stellar performances, as well as roster moves, for ex-Mountaineers.

Aaron Beasley Def. Back
Class of 1995
Aaron saw the field, but his only dent in the stat book was a pass defended in the Falcons' ugly 6-3 win over the Cardinals. Atlanta runs its record to 3-0 and will travel to Carolina this weekend.

Anthony Becht Tight End
Class of 1999
Anthony and the Jets had a bye this week. They'll take their unblemished 2-0 record to hapless Miami this weekend for an interdivisional game.

Rich Braham Off Lineman
Class of 1993
Rich sat out Sunday's contest with a lingering leg injury. The Bengals fell to the Ravens at home 23-9, slipping to 1-2. The Bengals visit Pittsburgh this weekend to start their divisional play.

John Browning Def. Lineman
Class of 1995
John manned the right end position and recorded four tackles in the Chiefs' 24-21 loss to the Texans. Kansas City got a grasp on run defense, allowing only 76 yards on the ground, but it wasn't enough to foil the upset-minded Texans. The Chiefs (0-3) don't have it any easier as they play at Baltimore on Monday Night Football this week.

Marc Bulger Quarterback
Class of 1999
Marc threw for 358 yards and touchdown, but the 32 of 49 effort couldn't lift the Rams over the Saints. Trailing late in the 4th quarter, Bulger led the Rams down the field and dazzled the home crowd with a 19-yard touchdown scamper that put St. Louis up 25-22 after a 2-point conversion pass to Kevin Curtis. A suspect decision by Mike Martz to squib kick backfired, as Aaron Brooks quickly led the Saints to set up a game-tying field goal. In the extra period, the Rams couldn't put together a drive, and the Saints took advantage, kicking a field goal to win 28-25. St. Louis slips to 1-2 and will travel to San Francisco this weekend.

Avon Cobourne Running Back
Class of 2002
Avon remains on the Lions practice squad.
spacer
Mike Compton Off. Lineman
Class of 1992
Mike was re-signed by the Jaguars this week after they placed defensive end Paul Spicer on IR. Jacksonville (3-0) will host Indianapolis this weekend.
spacer
James Davis Linebacker
Class of 2002
Davis had a combined total of seven tackles, including two on special teams, in Detroit's 30-13 loss to the Eagles Sunday. The Lions defensive front limited the Eagles to 59 yards rushing, but it was Philly's passing attack (356 yards) that did Detroit in. Detroit (2-1) will be off this week with a bye.

Jason Davis Def. Lineman
Class of 2002
Jason remains on the Texans practice squad.
spacer
Lance Frazier Cornerback
Class of 2003
Lance remains on the Ravens practice squad.
spacer
Barrett Green Linebacker
Class of 1999
Barrett had six tackles in the Giants 27-10 loss over the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland's offense managed just over 300 yards of total offense, but the Giants still pushed their record to 2-1. This week they travel to play Green Bay.
spacer
Brian King Def. Back
Class of 2003
Brian continues to rehab his injured back at the Carolina Panthers' practice facility.
spacer
Antwan Lake Def. Lineman
Class of 2001
Antwan was able to record an early tackle in Atlanta's 6-3 win over Arizona. He is seeing good playing time in the Falcons' 4-3 defense. The Falcons are an impressive 3-0 and hope to push that mark to 4-0 this week at Carolina.
spacer
Mike Logan Def. Back
Class of 1996
Mike was out with a tweaked hamstring in Pittsburgh's 13-3 win at Miami on Sunday night. The Steelers improve to 2-1 and host the Bengals this week.
spacer
Corey McIntyre Running Back
Class of 2001
Corey remains on the Browns practice squad.
spacer
Lance Nimmo Off. Lineman
Class of 2002
Lance was signed and will start the season on the Browns practice squad.
spacer
  Solomon Page Off. Lineman
Class of 1998
After being released from the Giants, Solomon has yet to be picked up by another team.
spacer
Jerry Porter Wide Receiver
Class of 1999
Jerry led the Raiders in yards and receptions, grabbing five passes for 84 yards in the 30-20 win over Tampa Bay. The Raiders improve to 2-1 in a game where they lost starting quarterback in Rich Gannon. Oakland travels to Houston this week.
spacer
Todd Sauerbrun Punter
Class of 1994
Todd and the Panthers (1-1) had a bye this week. They will return to action hosting the Atlanta Falcons this weekend.
spacer
Gary Stills Linebacker
Class of 1998
Gary saw the majority of his action on special teams in the Chiefs 24-21 loss to the Texans. He recorded three tackles, but fell on Kris Brown's squib kickoff as time expired, which ended any chances of Kansas City getting their first win. At 0-3, they will face the Ravens in Baltimore on Monday night.
spacer
John Thornton Def. Lineman
Class of 1998
John recorded three tackles and one sack, but the Bengals gave up 254 yards rushing in a 23-9 loss to the Ravens. Cincinnati (1-2) will travel to Pittsburgh this weekend.
spacer
  David Upchurch Def. Lineman
Class of 2002
David was released from the Ravens practice squad on Wednesday, Sept. 22.
spacer
Mike Vanderjagt Kicker
Class of 1992
Mike was busy Sunday evening, going six for six on extra points (including one he had three cracks at). He also booted a 45-yard field goal in the Colts' 45-31 shootout win over the Packers. Vanderjagt also proved his toughness, coming through as the "last man to beat" and recording not one, but two tackles on kickoff returns.
spacer
Grant Wiley Linebacker
Class of 2003
Wiley will have a checkup next week following his shoulder surgery. If his progress is good, he will return to Minnesota to continue his rehabilitation.
spacer
Quincy Wilson Running Back
Class of 2003
Quincy remains with the Falcons practice squad.
spacer
Amos Zereoue Running Back
Class of 1998
Amos provided a solid contribution with six rushes covering 41 yards and a nine-yard pass reception in Oakland's 30-20 win over Tampa Bay. Oakland (2-1) plays at Houston this weekend.
